Interview with John Murray

Please explain, what is sports psychology?

THAT IS AN EXTREMELY BROAD TERM THAT REFERS TO FIELDS INVOLVED IN THE SCIENCE AND PRACTICE OF UTILIZING PSYCHOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNIQUES TO THE BETTERMENT OF SPORT, THE IMPROVEMENT OF ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE, THE WELL BEING OF THE INDIVIUDAL AND MANY MORE THINGS TOO! ONE WAY TO THINK OF IT IS THE FIELD OF PSYCHOLOGY APPLIED TO SPORT, BUT IT ALSO INVOLVES THE SPORTS SCIENCES.

You have travelled worldwide as a tennis professional.. Have you always had a passion for sport?

YES. I GREW UP IN SOUTH FLORIDA WHERE I COULD PLAY AND WATCH SPORTS YEAR-ROUND. AT AGE 9 DON SHULA CAME TO TOWN AND IT HAS NEVER BEEN THE SAME IN SOUTH FLORIDA J … TENNIS IS POPULAR ALL OVER THE WORLD, BUT FLORIDA IS A GREAT MECCA FOR THAT SPORT WHICH I TOOK UP IN MY YOUTH

What made you take up writing?

TRAINING AS A PSYCHOLOGIST FORCES YOU TO THINK AND WRITE CLEARLY AND WITH PRECISION. AT THE UNIVERISTY OF FLORIDA I MUST HAVE DONE 3-4 NEW ASSESSMENT REPORTS EACH WEEK ON THE PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC ROTATION FOR MANY YEARS. I SHARED MY KNOWELDGE IN MANY COLUMNS AND THEN WROTE SOME BOOKS. I ENJOY WRITING NOW AS IT IS A WINDOW INTO THE MIND AND A MEANS OF HELPING OTHERS GREATLY.

Tell us a bit about your book Smart tennis: How to Play and Win the Mental Game.

AS A TENNIS PRO, BUDDING CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST, AND BUDDING SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST, I WANTED TO COMBINE THESE THREE DISCIPLINES TO HELP PEOPLE IMPROVE WITH THEIR STRONGEST WEAPON – THE MIND. I WAS AWARE OF THE WELL KNOWN “INNER GAME OF TENNIS” AND BRAD GILBERT’S “WINNING UGLY,” BOTH TERRIFIC BOOKS THAT HELPED MY TENNIS GAME AS WELL AS EARLIER COACHING, BUT THERE WAS NOTHING YET THAT REALLY PULLED FROM THE SCIENTIFIC ADVANCES IN SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY TO HELP THE TENNIS PLAYER. TIM GALWEY WAS A COLLEGE TENNIS COACH AND GILBERT WAS A TENNIS PLAYER, BUT NEITHER HAD THE SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND IN BOTH FIELD OF PSYCHOLOGY THAT I HAD, SO I TRIED TO STAND ON THEIR SHOULDERS AND GO BEYOND THEM TOO IN GIVING PEOPLE AN EASY SET OF SOLID PRINCIPLES THAT WERE FOUNDED ON RESEARCH RATHER THAN ASSUMPTION, DATA RATHER THAN OPINON. IT IS STILL SELLING WELL IN ITS GENRE 10 YEARS LATER AND I SAW IT IN BEIJING, CHINA AND ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA RECENTLY, AND HAS BEEN TRANSATED INTO SPANISH AND JAPANESE AS WELL. IT DID NOT HURT TO GET THE TOP TENNIS PLAYER IN THE WORLD AT THE TIME, LINDSAY DAVENPORT, TO ENDORSE THE BOOK ON THE COVER.

Your commentary is found almost daily in thousands of newspapers, magazines, and trade journals. Did you find it easier to write your book or to write articles for publications? Why?

WRITING ARTICLES IS FAIRLY EASY BECAUSE THE TOPIC IS USUALLY MORE CONFINED AND NARROW. WRITING A BOOK IS DESERT WARFARE. YOU NEED 6 MONTHS OF TOTAL FOCUS WITH AT LEAST 6 HOURS A DAY, AND A PATIENT ATTITUDE TO EDIT IT 20 TIMES IF NEEDED. SO WHILE WRITING A BOOK IS HARDER, IT IS ALSO FAR MORE REWARDING BECAUSE IT EVENTAULLY MAKES IT ALL AROUND THE WORLD AND HELPS MANY MORE PEOPLE.

What projects do you have planned for the future?

MANY. I AM WORKING ON A BOOK ABOUT THE PSYCHOLOGY OF FOOTBALL AND HAVE WORKED ON PROJECTS ABOUT BUSINESS AND DIET/WEIGHT CONTROL. I HAVE A SERIES OF WEBSITE THAT I WILL BE UNLEASHING BEFORE TOO LONG. I HAVE PLANS TO WRITE A MORE GENERAL BOOK ON SPORTS PSYCHOLOGY TOO. IF I EVER GET THE TIME I WOULD LOVE TO WRITE A NOVEL, HOST A NATIONAL TV AND RADIO SHOW, AND KEEP BUILDING AWARENESS ABOUT THIS GREAT FIELD THAT IS REALLY A SCIENCE OF SUCCESS.

Where can people find out more about you and your book?

MY WEBSITE AT WWW.JOHNFMURRAY.COM IS THE STARTING POINT. THE BOOK IS IN MOST BARNES AND NOBLE STORES, AND BORDERS BOOK STORES, OR ON AMAZON.COM OR CAN BE SEEN ALSO AT WWW.SMARTTENNIS.COM

Anything else you'd like to add?

I ALSO LIKE TO COMMENT ON SOCIAL ISSUES IN SPORTS. I THINK THE MAJOR SPORTS TEAMS NEED TO UTILIZE SPORTS PSYCHOLOGSITS ON A DAILY BASIS TO HELP THEIR TEAMS IMPROVE, HELP THE INDIVIDUALS ON THE TEAM LEAD HEALTHIER LIVES, AND TO PREVENTIVELY HELP IN MANY AREAS THAT ARE DETRIMENTAL TO BOTH INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETY (E.G., GUN VIOLENCE, DRUGS, POOR EXAMPLES FOR OUR CHILDREN).

Interview with Nancy Oelklaus

Tell us a bit about your book JOURNEY FROM HEAD TO HEART:LIVING AND WORKING AUTHENTICALLY
JOURNEY FROM HEAD TO HEART: LIVING AND WORKING AUTHENTICALLY is written from my own 10-year journey to find and live my life from the spiritual disciplines of love, truth, faith, and enlightenment. So many books talk about these topics, but few of them give such a clear roadmap with tools that work for people to create the lives they truly want. Early in the book I use the analogy of the Lewis and Clark expedition. It took them two years to travel from St. Louis to the Oregon coast. The terrain was unfamiliar; they stopped along the way to make friends with the natives and to draw maps and collect specimen. Their return trip took only 6 months. Why? Because they were able to use what they had learned on the trip out. Today, continuously building on this beginning, you and I can make that same journey in a matter of a few hours.

My journey inward took 10 years. My goal is to shorten that period of time for others through this book so that others might spend more time in "happily ever after."

Who is your book designed for?
JOURNEY FROM HEAD TO HEART: LIVING AND WORKING AUTHENTICALLY is for people who are tired of seeking and ready to find their best lives and enjoy living. It's a guidebook for making the small shifts that yield big results through minimizing ego and expanding the authentic, true, best self.

You also do coaching. Why do you think it's important to educate people in problem solving?
My coaching is not so much about problem solving as it is about energy-shifting. I teach people to free themselves of fear, resentment, anger, and other negative, minimizing energies. They learn to be empowered through the disciplines of surrender, forgiveness, faith, and affirming what they truly want from life. The shifts they make through the coaching process permeate their entire lives--from how they treat and talk to themselves to their relationships and ultimately their business or career success.

Where can people find out more about you and your work?
My web site is www.HeadtoHeart.com

Anything else you'd like to add?

I love to think of this book on bedside tables and in bathrooms, being picked up and referred to often as life's challenges present themselves. It is a lifetime companion--an enjoyable first read and then thereafter, a treasured reference.

Thank you for your good questions.

Review: A World Away by T J Smith

A World Away by T.J. Smith
Reviewed by Tannia E. Ortiz-Lopes

Publisher of ''Time with Tannia'' (http://timewithtannia.tripod.com/)

A World Away is author T.J. Smith's first book of the Dan Clay's leap of faith saga to save his missing older brother, William, from an evil parallel world.

The book cover shows a gloomy castle standing on the top of a mountain surrounded by creepy trees and a bewitched full moon saying to uninvited visitors: beware, beware, beware...!

Dan Clay is a high school senior who looks like a nerd. He is smart, shy, wears glasses, and his non-athletic body makes him the perfect target for the two known school bullies, Sur and Malice.

When Dan finds his science project trashed all over the school's gym floor, all his dreams of obtaining a scholarship are crushed. He storms out of the gym and wanders around town trying to cool-off his rage. Dan is so absorbed in his thoughts that he, unknowingly, enters the forbidden and mythical Eldritch Forest. It's dark and suddenly Dan realizes he is lost. All of the childhood stories he had heard about demons and mythical beasts among the trees and rocks of the forest start to become real to him. He trembles of fear. He then sits on a fallen tree, looks around and sees a large oak tree. It seems familiar to him, so he walks over to the tree and touches it. Upon touching the tree, his hand penetrates the tree's surface. Curiosity takes the best of him and he places his hand deeper into the tree, when suddenly he hears a loud noise behind him. He gets scared and his glasses fall on the floor. Dan bends down to pick them up when he is pushed into the tree by an invisible force.

Dan is confused and after hearing more noises in the forest, he decides to rush back home. He is more amazed and puzzled after he sees his family celebrating William's 18th birthday. Dan quickly analyzes all the events and concludes that the ''tree'' plays a key role in his ordeals.

During the first three chapters of the book, Dan is gathering information about his brother, the town's history, and the history of the Eldritch Forest's legend. The author uses Sam White, an old lunatic homeless man, to share with Dan information about Eldritch Forest and the ''world beyond the oak tree''.

Dan secretly plans to go back to the forest to rescue William. He decides to seize the opportunity while he prepares to attend an after graduation survival camp. The day of the departure, Dan walks to town with his friend and next door neighbor, Jimmy. At the meeting place, after he registers with the bus driver to go to camp, Dan takes advantage of everybody's distraction and walks to Eldritch Forest. Jimmy notices Dan walking away with his bag. He grabs his bag and follows Dan closely. Cindy, a classmate and friend of them, also notices their odd behavior and not wanting to go to survival camp either, follows them from a saved distance. After sharing enough information about Eldritch Forest with Dan, Sam is suspicious and also has a hunch that Dan might venture to return to the other world to save his missing brother, William. On the day of departure to survival camp, Sam keep a close eye on Dan.

Dan goes through the oak tree into the other world and as he is recovering from the experience, suddenly and unexpected falling from the tree come Jimmy, Cindy, and Sam. Dan has no choice but to let his friends stay and join him in his quest. There in the ''other world'' Sam calls Dr. Mark O'Brien, an old friend of his.

The remainder of the book takes the reader back and forth between both worlds. While Dan and his companions dare to go further and further into the forest, the parents in the other world are devastated about their children sudden and unexpected disappearance.

My hat goes off to this author, whose imagination and creativity will keep the reader engaged in this God forsaken world as Dan and his companions encounter tree nymphs, purple frogs with teeth and very long tongues, a carnivores grass, mean looking moles, a huge snail, a giant spider, a three headed Siberian Tiger, trolls, in addition to other prehistoric and mythological creatures.

This Young Adult (YA) fiction story is entertaining for middle schoolers, as they will be able to identify themselves with the dilemmas, predicaments, and personalities of the characters. The book, however, is not suitable for younger children as they might get scared by some of the situations.

Will Dan and his companions ever reach the castle where he believes his brother William is trapped? Will they survive all the tribulations of their journey? For the answers to these and other questions, join Dan, Jimmy, Cindy, and Sam as they travel into the unknown in ''A World Away.''

Apollo's Lyre

"We all have something or someone where we reflect our first initial steps into the publishing world, perhaps something that helped launch your career or helped you pick up the pen and write your first story.

For me it was Apollo's Lyre. I made close ties with Bret Wright, cried when Patty Ferguson passed away, and most recently stressed to decide what to do. Bret informed me he had to step down due to workload and I faced a decision to shut Apollo's Lyre or continue it.

There was no way I could close it down so the past two weeks I've been working on a new site, meeting with my staff editors, and am proud to announce the relaunch of Apollo's Lyre.

Although we are a nonpaying market at the moment, we do have a large following, and our call for submissions is now open. Our first issue will be in June.

We are open for:

Poetry - editor Betty Dobson
Flash fiction 1-500 words - editor Kimberly Brown
Flash fiction 501-1000 words - editor Jim Harrington
Writing articles - editor Lea Schizas

Please go to our website (we've got a blog, too) and check out each editor's specific guidelines:

http://apollos-lyre.tripod.com/

The new site is still in its infancy stage but come back often as we build our Publication Venues and other interesting links for you.

I want to thank everyone who supported us in the past and hope you continue reading us in the future".

Review: Wai-nani: Voice from Ancient Hawaii by Linda Ballou

Title: Wai-nani: Voice from Ancient Hawaii
Author: Linda Ballou
Reviewed by Barbara Sharp Milbourn

Travel writer and photographer Linda Ballou delivers a generous slice of Hawaiian history with details of land and sea so vivid, it is almost better than being there.

Wai-nani: Voice from Ancient Hawaii is a meticulously researched account of the Hawaiian Islands around the time of Captain James Cook. The major theme of the novel is the dismantling of the social hierarchal system based on kapu (taboo) that had been brought to the Islands by the Tahitians years before. But what a story!
Meet Wai-nani whose character is based on Ka'ahumanu, favorite wife of Kamehameha the Great, unifier of the Hawaiian Islands around 1810. She is a young woman of royal descent so at home in the sea that she thinks of herself as half sea creature. Her comfort in the water is juxtaposed to her conflict on land, particularly her resistance to the kapu system. We accompany her as she leaves home and meets Makaha (Kamehameha) two hundred years ago when chiefs in feathered capes and tattooed warriors battled for island dominion, priests read the future in pig entrails, men and women ate in separate houses, and human sacrifices were commonplace. We know her and her people, and we connect to place through stunning details of mamo birds, koa trees, 'ie'ie flowers, and taro fields. We drink the bitter 'awa, trek up steep palis, peer into smoking volcanoes, and wave slide bearded monsters.

Much changed with the arrival of Captain Cook, the death of Kamehameha, and the pressure brought to bear on the system. But some things are eternal—love, the circle of life, and the grand and vibrant sea.

The author’s reverence for the land and its people inhabits her words. Linda Ballou is a new voice from ancient Hawaii.

Interview with Alan Smith

Tell us a bit about your book 'UnBreak your health'.

UnBreak Your Health is the complete guide to the world of complementary and alternative therapies. It's like a map to help you find your own path to better health. I like to think of it as the view from the top of a mountain so you can see everything that's available and the best way to get there.

The book features 300+ listings in 138 different subjects, testimonials and some of the most interesting recent scientific discoveries in a very concise, easy-to-read style. By focusing on therapies and not diet or supplements I've been able to put together a guide to a lot of different healing options. It's the place to start a journey toward better health because if readers find something of interest there is always a website or recommendation where they can go to learn more.

Why did you write this book?

I've been in situations where the doctor says "you'll just have to learn to live with it" and I know from personal experience that it's not a nice place to be. I wanted to help others who found themselves in similar situations or just wanted better health without prescription drugs. When you're sitting there with no idea of what to do next, it can be very scary.

What doctors don't tell you is that what they really mean is there's nothing more they can do for you ... but that there are hundreds of other therapies waiting to help you! There are therapies that have been proven safe and effective for decades, hundreds, even thousands of years that today's medical doctors ignore. We all need to become empowered with as much information as possible so that we know all of our options because that will lead to making the best possible decisions about our own health care.

How did you research for this book?

I had to research in a variety of ways because each therapy was a different situation. Some therapies have been around for thousands of years and have lots of books and articles about them while others were more recent innovations and have very little information available. There were lots of phone calls to national trade associations and interviews with practitioners, and of course I had to try several of them along the way too!

You have a journalism degree. How did this help in the writing of this book?

The process of researching and writing a story is a craft that takes time to learn. I'm very fortunate to have been trained at one of the finest journalism schools in America , the University of Missouri , and that experience made developing UnBreak Your Health much easier. Granted, I was a little rusty at first, but it really was like riding a bike. The more work I did the more my journalism training came back to me.

The most important skill I acquired many years ago was a reporter's perspective for what people want to read. Writing news stories for newspapers, radio and TV in college taught me how to separate the important information from the fluff, the wheat from the chaff as they say. As I was researching my way through a lot of information on a particular subject I had to filter everything out but the most important material. I know the short, simple style of the book is a feature readers appreciate a great deal.

You have taken part in several events as a speaker. How has this affected your book sales?

I've been pleasantly surprised at how many people come up after a speech to buy a copy of UnBreak Your Health. My presentation themes are to take responsibility for your own health, to empower yourself with information and to find your own path to better health. Those aren't easy topics to talk about but there are so many folks who are dissatisfied with their own health and the state of mainstream medicine that they're delighted to discover there are so many options available.

Speaking gives me an opportunity to improve the credibility of complementary and alternative medicine. I talk about how we're at the crossroads of medical research (epigenetics) because how you live your life, down to the power of your own thoughts and feelings can change the functioning of your genes. Today's science is crossing the path of mind-body medicine. We're discovering how many of these complementary and alternative therapies work and it gives them more credibility so people are more likely to try something new, or something old. At least I can make the subject of health entertaining as well as educational!

Where can people find out more about you and your writing?

The best place to learn more is on the book's website at www.unbreakyourhealth.com. There are book reviews, radio interviews and podcasts about complementary and alternative therapies. My publisher tried to get me started doing podcasts for a long time but since I don't own an iPod I kept putting it off because I didn't think it would be very popular. Boy was I wrong! Before I had 25 shows posted on the website we were getting over 6,000 hits and over 700 downloads every week.

Anything else you'd like to add?

Yes, that there is always hope! Just because you haven't found the right therapy yet doesn't mean that there isn't one waiting for you. That's the most important message in UnBreak Your Health. Anyone who's gone from medical specialist to medical specialist knows how frustrating it can be to find the right treatment for a health problem. It can be challenging to find the right CAM therapy too, but just discovering how many more options are out there offers hope. When you discover the right therapy (body, mind, spirit/energy or combination) the improvements in your health can be amazing. It's not just repairing broken health, it really is "unbreaking" your health or taking it back to a point that you didn't even think was possible.

Thanks for talking with me about UnBreak Your Health!

Review: Integrity: Do You Have It? by Dennis AuBuchon

Title: Integrity: Do You Have It? (2nd Edition)
Author: Dennis AuBuchon
Reviewed by Steven G. Lauck

In the last few months I have read and/or reviewed several books on ethics and integrity. I am not sure why there are so many books appearing, but it may have to do with the era just past, the Enron and WorldCom fiascos or possibly the current political environment. In either case Dennis Aubuchon has written a book that sets the definition standard for integrity: Integrity, Do You Have It? The book not only provides a definition of Integrity and how to spot it or the lack of it, it provides a guide to live with more Integrity. Note: While this is a second edition it is my first read.

The first chapters, Definitions, Integrity Characteristics and Types, guide the reader through what Integrity is and review of Integrity's concepts and characteristics. They provide a definition of Integrity that can be measured by everyone no matter the background or experiences. This is an important measure, as the author explains, each of us has our own definition of integrity based on our experiences and our values. We are presented various definitions from our families, business, educational systems, and the government.

Chapter 3, The Bible and Integrity, I found very interesting and enlightening. I have heard some of the verses quoted by speakers but never realized the statements had roots in the Bible. It was also interesting to see the King James Version compared to the Living Translation version of the Bible. If you are not the most religious person do not let this chapter turn you off to this book. The information provides insight where some of the accepted definitions of Integrity originate.

The balance of the book presents specific areas of Integrity:
Personal
Quality and Integrity
Job
Education
Political
Real Estate
Integrity in The Boy Scouts of America
Integrity in the News

The text had some ah-ha moments for me. The first is Chapter 8 Political Integrity. The author has provided information from The Ethics Manual of The U.S. House of Representatives. This provides a peek into how Integrity is managed at the Congressional level - information, as the author mentions, which is not readily available to the general public. In Chapter 9 is the Code of Ethics for Realtors. Some of this information is worth the purchase price of the book

The second ah-ha moment is Chapter 10, Integrity in the Boy Scouts of America. The book reminded me of something one of my mentors always said, " If you live by the Boy Scout Oath and Law you will live a great life". The author does a great job of presenting the Oath and Law with explanation of each characteristic plus some history and data about the organization.

I highly recommend this book, not only for the reasons mentioned above, but also because throughout the text and in the Appendix the author provides websites and resources for background information and additional information. I see this book as a start to the real-world understanding of Integrity. It is up to those who choose to digest this book to go forth and apply the standard.

Interview with Karina Fabian from The Marketing Mentor

• Tell us a bit about your background in the writing industry.
I have been writing professionally since 1995, and have been published in over 50 publications both in non-fiction and fiction, from Catholic diocese magazines to national magazines, e-zones to anthologies.
I sold my fist book, Infinite Space, Infinite God in 2007. I quickly learned the need for authors to market their own works. It's been a steep learning process for me, but I've learned a lot of the must-dos and the tricks of getting myself and my books out there, and I'm seeing the results in my latest novel, Magic, Mensa and Mayhem.

• You recently started a new service called 'The Marketing Mentor'. What gave you the idea for this?
My publisher, Dindy, at Swimming Kangaroo. She wanted someone to help her other authors learn how to promote their works, and believed I was a great choice because, in her words, "There isn't a day when I don't get a Google alert with your name." After we discussed it, I decided to open up the business to anyone who wishes assistance, and she would supplement her authors to take the courses or programs.

• What services do you offer?

One on One Mentoring: $200
1 hour phone consult
3 months' mentoring--weekly assignment with e-mail feedback + 30-minute call
at month's end
2 free classes
Critique of 3 marketing materials (1/month)

Group Mentoring: $100
1.5 hour chat session
2 free classes
6 assignments with forum available for Q&A

Online Classes: $30
Each class would run 4-6 weeks with one class per week and assignments each
week. I am taking registrations for Building a marketing Plan, a 5-week
course examining your marketing options and developing a plan. It will start
the week of May 15.

The 30-Minute Marketer Marketing Newsletter $12: Marketing can seem an
overwhelming job, but there are small tasks you can do to build your
presence on the web and in the media. "The 30-Minute Marketer" is a weekly
newsletter of marketing tasks that take less than half an hour or less to
do.

• Are your services available on an international scale?
Yes. They're all on-line. If we do a phone consult, we can use Skype or go to an online chat room.

• Any tips for a marketing novice?
I have many on my website, www.fabianspace.com. Under the Marketing Mentor menu, you'll find some free e-books and tips. However, in general:
1. Do a little something every day
2. Forge relationships; don't just send out ads
3. Give the reader something--information or entertainment.
4. Get a website where you can post information about you and your books. Even a free one is better than nothing, and many have menu-driven website building programs.
5. Find your target audience. Don't believe "everyone" will love your book. Especially if you have little time, concentrate on the people most likely to be interested.
6. Be creative, have fun, and if something isn't working, move on.

• Where can people find out more about you and your services?

www.fabianspace.com. This is my megasite, so my books are at the top and you can click on the covers for more information. However, for the Marketing Mentor stuff in particular, look to the left under "Marketing Mentor."

• Anything else you'd like to add?
Marketing can be a lot of fun. I've made some great friends, had some terrific blog tours, and enjoy talking to people about my book. I also like helping folks learn to market.
My next class is on how to create your own Virtual Book Tour. This is an online tour of blogs, podcasts, etc. Some places charge hundreds to thousands for this, but they are easy to do on your own. The class is $30, and at the end, you'll have your blog tour set (if you do the homework.) It starts April 20.

Sandy Ceren Interview

Tell us a bit about your latest book "LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP-A PREMARITAL GUIDE"

Originally published as a highly recommended professional text for premarital counselors, the research based quizzes, exercises and case examples have been assembled in this easy to use book for couples planning to marry to help them learn more about themselves and each other to determine if they are ready for marriage and to choose a mate who shares their values and goals and has the qualities to make an appropriate partner. The book also teaches communication and conflict resolution skills

What made you write this book?

I saw the need for a book based on my professional experience with couples in conflict who consult me to help them repair what isn’t working for them. Too often I conclude that a couple would probably have been better off had they not married each other or married at all. If they had addressed their conflicts before marriage it may have prevented their problems.

Too many couples are at the brink of divorce, and after we assess their situation, it is clear that the relationship cannot be salvaged as they are not right for each other. Sometimes I puzzle over why they made the choice to be together from the beginning. Were they so dazzled by each other that they couldn’t think straight? Were they desperate for a partner? Was parental influence at play? Was a need for status or money an inducement?

You have over forty years expereince as a Clinical Psychologist. Why could your book be an important tool for people planning on getting married?

To prevent precipitous or unhappy marriages, my aim is to help couples make one of the most important decisions they may ever make—a life-long commitment to another human being. Wise couples will take the time and effort to learn more about themselves and each other and how to communicate better and resolve conflicts. One or both partners may have suffered from difficult previous marriages or one or both are the offspring of divorced parents. They want to avoid problems, and are willing to do as much as possible to assure that they are right for each other and not destined for another tremendous emotional upheaval involving huge legal expenses, re-location, child custody concerns, negative effects on family life and the pain of a shattered dream. They may be all too aware of what is involved in a stressful relationship

You've also written fiction. How does your writing process differ from when you write non fiction?

Writing fiction has a different goal. It’s designed to entertain, to transport the reader to a different time and place, to create drama and tension with believable characters. I feel the presence of a special muse when I write fiction. It feels more expressive, more creative, more emotional. Like making music or painting.

For me writing non-fiction is more cognitive. My intellect is released. My goal is to educate in an interesting fashion.

How do you organise your writing time?

I must write when it is quiet without interruptions. Therefore it is usually late at night or early in the morning when I don’t expect any phone calls, or consultations, and my husband is sleeping, or occupied with his work. We have different work schedules so that helps.

Review: The Disappearance by Efrem Sigel

Title: The Disappearance
Author: Efrem Sigel
ISBN: 978-1-57962-180-3 Pages: 262, $30.00, Publication Date: February 2009, Cloth, Fiction, Published by The Permanent Press.

The Disappearance by Efrem Sigel is a gripping novel about a search for truth and what is behind the mysterious disappearance of Dan Sandler. Sigel presents a powerful main character, Joshua Sandler, who relentlessly pursues what happened to his son. Efrem Sigel is an award winning author who wrote The Kermanshah Transfer and five books of non-fiction.

Joshua, Nathalie, and Dan Sandler seemed to have the idyllic life. Joshua a busy New York businessman and his wife a former cellist had retreated to their summer home called The Hollow. This is a small town in western Massachusetts with a population of 160 people.

Dan, the Sandler’s only child, suddenly disappears from their home on a warm summer August day. Over the next year, events that follow are haunting and portray many hidden secrets in this unique town.

Incessantly driven, Joshua and Chief Sammons interrogate townspeople, but very few clues are developed. Many intriguing characters try to help, but no one has seen a thing. Dan’s so-called friends appear to have solid excuses for the day that he was last seen and these troubled teens have a way of hiding the truth.

The story moves quickly as interrogation and search continue. Uncertainty becomes more focused than what may have really happened. The gravity of emotional grief becomes unbearable for the parents resulting in the unraveling of their marriage.

Some missteps occur. An interesting dark-haired woman complicates Joshua’s life with her secrets and is drawn into his search. A mean-spirited town leader also has something to hide and holds a vicious campaign against a newly planned resort for the community. Joshua wonders if the resort is somehow related to his missing son. Now, the plot gets cloudy. An overlooked clue eventually helps in the resolution of this mystery.

Sigel beautifully depicts the inhabitants of The Hollow with realism and weaves a powerful story about a family’s struggle for their missing child. Joshua and Nathalie’s marriage is challenged by the ongoing investigation.

A highly charged book that will keep you guessing as the story unfolds to its conclusion while displaying an unrelenting love by a father for his son. A great read and highly recommended.

When did you launch Premium Promotional Services?

With the vision ‘to help writers’ existing for a long time, we officially opened Premium Promotional Services cyber-doors March 2, 2009 .

Why did you start Premium Promotional Services?

By 2008, I had two polished novels ready to be published. Through near a hundred workshops, a few pitching sessions with editors, submission responses by nearly a thousand agents, I soon discovered they all voiced the same concern… “How are you going to promote yourself? Please provide me with information about your author platform.” My first response was: “What? You mean I can’t just write?” There was no where to turn. All doors remained shut.

I set forth to research the area of promotion. I learned I needed to target an audience, build friendships through networks, and provide my followers with a platform they loved. I started my first blog, Jo-Anne Vandermeulen “Conquer All Obstacles” (link: http://www.gr5mom2.wordpress.com), providing assistance to fellow writers. After a few posts, the comments started pouring in.

The first door flew open…

Immediately, I discovered my niche. Authors from all over the world cried help, requesting promotional services. Through many hours of studying the promotional business and connecting with professionals, I produced templates for author platforms, explored strategies to target an audience, and generated a buzz of massive activity.

Through my journey, I discovered techniques to climb to the top of the world wide search engines, and suddenly I was performing my services to over a BILLION viewers on the Internet. No longer was I invisible. I did it! The large number of hits, responses, and dashboard stats proved I had successfully promoted myself.

The second door flew open…

On March 2, 2009 , (with the help of my partner, Brian Knight) Premium Promotional Services launched into production—a writer’s solution to all their promotional and marketing needs. Through my personal blog “Conquer All Obstacles” and the business, “Premium Promotional Services”, there’s no better way to share my wealth of knowledge and help my fellow writers. I can successfully provide a requested service so they can continue to write.
