Writing Career or Just a Hobby?

Writing Career or Just a Hobby?

A while ago I recorded a video for a project being organised by a company called The Ladders. They asked me to share about my first job and work experiences.

Here's the video in case you missed it:

When I filmed this I realised that all those work experiences had helped me get to where I am today and given me a clearer idea about what I wanted to do as a career. So why am I sharing this with you here? Because it applies to all writers. Whether you're writing as a full time job, or writing part time, or even just as a hobby, it's all experience that will help you realise if a writing career is for you.

As I mention in the video, you might find that some jobs, even if you really enjoy them, aren't meant to be anything more than a hobby. In other cases you might find that your hobby can become your full time job.

Another important point is that you can learn from each experience... even the ones that, at the time, might feel like a complete disaster.

Is writing your full time job? What work experience have you had over the years that helped you realise you wanted to be a writer? Share in the comments below.

I love to hear from you. So feel free to comment, but keep in mind the basics of blog etiquette — no spam, no profanity, no slander, etc.
