New logo for Writers and Authors

2012 will see big changes for the Writers and Authors site. A few of the things that will be happening include:

  • a new website url
  • online courses and workshops
  • a store with W&A merchandise
  • an updated and expanded resources section
  • a new logo
Here's a sneak peak preview of the new logo

Why the logo change?

I feel that the new logo better represents the site. The old image of books made it seem limited to published authors. The new logo is better suited to represent all writers from freelance writers to authors of books.

Where was she going? 30,000km later she finds herself in the most unlikely place to try to piece her life together, trying to make sense of the constant feeling of being UNFINISHED.

CWL: Kilimanjaro and beyond by Barry Finlay

  • book blurb –
"If you're the kind of person who can usually find any excuse to talk yourself out of a great idea, this book is the inspiration you need to get out of your comfort zone and make things happen." Helen Osler, author of Cameras of Kilimanjaro, Australia
It is January 16, 2009, and 60 year-old BARRY FINLAY and his son CHRIS are propped against a rock, struggling to draw a breath on their treacherous climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. Their destination is tantalizingly close, yet the weather and -- more importantly -- their health will determine the end result. Barry's backpack holds a Canadian flag with the names of over 200 donors mobilized by the climbers back home. The donors have contributed to providing classrooms and clean water for desperately deserving school children in Tanzania. For Barry, this is a life-changing physical, mental and spiritual adventure. Follow along as he and his son strive to climb one of the World's Seven Summits, meet the children who will benefit from their fundraising, and come to an understanding that one or two people really can make a difference. It is a journey that leaves the two with the lasting impression that nothing is more satisfying than reaching a goal and giving others the opportunity to achieve theirs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experience a life-changing event without leaving home., August 30, 2011
This review is from: Kilimanjaro and Beyond (A Life-Changing Journey) (Paperback)
After reading the first few chapters, I knew this would be a book I would have to read in one sitting, if possible. I was engaged from page one and tried to imagine going through the same preparations and planning as Barry and Chris described in order to give themselves the best possible chance for success.

Fitness training, medical examinations, including consultation with doctors experienced in foreign travel, miles of hiking and biking, immunization shots, so much more than just buying backpacks, boots and warm clothing.

This book is truly an adventure shared with the reader. It is written in unpretentious human style, with lots of humour and all the details of life on a mountain exposed. It also gives some insight into the culture-shock that is Africa, the people deprived of almost everything we take for granted yet happy and generous to visitors.

The amenities already in place through the generosity of Barry and Chris's supporters in their fund-raising efforts, the borehole and the classroom in the Mwanza area of Tanzania, and the visions for future improvements, are described near the end of the book and one is left with the certainty that they will be successfully implemented. Such is the determination of Barry and Chris Finlay.

If you would like to know what is required to one day stand on top of a 19,000 foot mountain and at the same time improve the lives of some of the people near the bottom of it, you have to read this book!

If one wants to know how to physically prepare, plan and carry out a successful adventure to the top of Africa's highest peak, this is an excellent how to book.
However, they did not just climb Kili - they went beyond. They had a cause which motivated them when the going got really tough.
The book will be inspiring for many.

Kilimanjaro and Beyond, Inspiring, Full of Laughter, Honesty and Questions!

Alysha Atma African Affairs Correspondent
"...honest, funny, very engaging and truly written from the heart" - Alysha Atma (From book cover)
Kilimanjaro and Beyond
(PORTLAND, Ore.) - “I had never intended to set out on a journey to change my life. As far as I was concerned, my life was just fine the way it was. However, someone once said that life begins at the end of our comfort zone.”
Barry Finlay broke out of his comfortable retirement to find that the life on the other side of the mountain is inspiring; that smiles, strength and perseverance can change futures, opportunities and generations. Climbing a mountain – Kilimanjaro was but a small part of his journey.
“Perhaps the word “climbed” doesn’t sufficiently describe it, as we have also scrambled, struggled, clung, slipped and slid.”
Laugh out Loud, a rollercoaster of questions, “Can we really do this?” This book is honest, funny and truly written from the heart.
“…how, as ordinary people in our small way, we can make a difference in the lives of others if we have the desire to do so and with a little perseverance. We attempt to demonstrate the power that one or two individuals can have by mobilizing friends, family and others to work together for a common cause.”
For Barry, education is that common cause; one of the keys to solving many of the world’s problems. After climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, Barry and Chris visit two schools in Mwanza, Tanzania confirming their desire to continue to step outside their comfort box, fundraising past two goals to ensure that the children there receive the education they deserve.
“Two surprising words popped into my head. Admiration and optimism. You can’t help but admire the children who were smiling and making the best of what they had, which was obviously very little, and I was optimistic that with determination and a little hard work, we could give the children a chance to gain an education and become major contributors to their society.”
Through various fundraisers, the least of which was the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Barry and his family raised enough to build a classroom at a primary school and to drill a well at a pre-school. But the work continues.

book blurb: A week after Blair Nightingale’s husband, Larry, dies, she learns she’s about to lose everything she owns due to a foolish mistake Larry made. In an instant, Blair’s life is transformed from rich, Silicon Valley trophy wife to poor, widowed single mom. Her only goal now is to provide for her daughter. As Blair begins to pick up the pieces, George—Larry’s best friend and the man she truly resents—seems to always be around. When Blair is overwhelmed by all the challenges she faces, she seeks comfort in baking rich, filled, three-layered chocolate cupcakes that her grandmother once taught her, and soon Blair's life is changed forever.

video trailer:

From the beginning this book captured my attention and I didn't want to put it down. It had deception, intrigue, romance and real life angst throughout. You had no choice but to hope that Blair's life as well as her newborn daughter's would turn out well. Family and friends played an important role and everyday life often got in the way. I'm not sure I would classify what Larry Nightingale did as a mistake as much as illegal and dishonest but however it's categorized his wife Blair pays the price and everything she does is to ensure her survival. As I read I knew that those rich filled, three-layered chocolate cupcakes that her grandmother baked had to play a major role in the story and I wasn't disappointed. So many details went into the description of the cupcakes that I could almost taste them. I recommend this book and look forward to reading other books by Geraldine Solon since this is the second book of hers that I've read andthoroughly enjoyed.

Interview with Stephanie Campbell

Your first book was published when you were 17 years old. What advice do you have for other young writers?
Don’t you ever, ever give up! Every little step gets you closer to your goal. If you love something, then you won’t ever stop doing it. I’ve had enough rejection letters to paper my walls, but I kept on going because writing was the one thing that got me excited and made me happy. At first, people laughed at me, but remember that success always comes when you keep pushing.
Secondly, build your network. I know it’s silly, but I met my first traditional publisher at blog. Don’t be afraid to stick your nose out there, either. Ask people for help. Yeah, some people may burn you, but some people won’t. Stick through the "No!" to get to the "Yes!"

How do you feel you've grown as a writer since you started out?
I have grown so, SO much. I look at my writing during my first book and cringe. I now know grammar books like the back of my hand, and I talk to my editors after my edits to see what I need to improve on. I’ve actually learned a lot simply by saying, "Hey, I’ve noticed that I’ve had problems with…How do I get better?"
My editors have actually become my best friends because of this.

Tell us a bit about your latest book.

Poachers is about a boy who sees things that other people can’t. They’re shadowy, dark, scary things that hang over him and frighten him to no end. One day, his mother gets sick. He wants desperately to save her, and one of these shadows disguised as a human promises him that she will. She gives him a shriveled fruit that kills his mother. He becomes overcome with guilt and rage and becomes a "poacher." He must learn to forgive himself, and he must learn to forgive the creatures of the shadow world.

How are you promoting the book?
I am blogging and blogging and blogging. It is a writer’s most important resource. I write articles, send out papers, and do whatever I can to get the word out. One of the great things about having books in hard copy is that I’m able to do book signings and visit schools. I have a school presentation planned in November to talk about dreams and my book. I’m terrified but excited.

Who is your publisher and why did you choose them?
Old Line Publishing is my publisher. I did the traditional publisher because, regardless of what is said, I’ve done it both ways and feel that my traditional publishers respect what I have to say. (And I’m grateful to that.) They don’t ignore their authors. Plus, either way you’re going to have to get sales for your book. A big mistake that writers make is assuming that once the book is published they’re done. Selling the book takes just as much work, or even more so, than writing it.

What other projects are you working on?
Right now I am very excited about my book in progress, E is for Eternity. It is a fantastic science fiction book about a machine that can tell the future and eventually destroys the world. I actually found that manuscript, all three hundred and fifty pages of it, stored in some strange place in my processor. I pulled it out and realized that it was possibly the best thing that I’ve ever written. Only I could lose a book that big.

What do you like doing when you're not busy writing?
Not much, honestly. Right now I’m still getting my feet underneath me, so I write during the day and moonlight at another job. I also am in the process of starting a publishing company and am testing the waters on myself. I run daily to keep my body from growing because of my ice cream addiction, but to me free time is a foreign word. I drive my friends nuts. They finish sentences for me.
"Can you come over? It’s Friday," they say.
"No. I can’t. I’m--"
I’m hoping that all of these exhausting, late days will pay off.

Where can people find out more about you and your writing?
Oh, that’s easy! I love to blog. For example, many people don’t realize that I’ve just published a poetry book of mine, Where All Rivers Meet. I announce things like that via my blog.
I also write about…well…writing at:

Anything else you'd like to add?
Thanks for reading this! Also, thank you to my marvelous host! I really appreciate you allowing me to be here today.
